Scotland invented it in the 1500s. Portland is making it better. Solid walnut. Curved blade. Does everything your spoon can’t.

What Is a Spurtle?

The spurtle is a traditional Scottish kitchen tool dating to the 1500s. Originally designed for stirring porridge, its tapered blade reaches into corners a round spoon can’t touch and stirs without the drag of a flat spatula. Today it’s the most versatile utensil in the kitchen: stirs soups, scrapes pot sides, flips protein, serves from pan to plate, folds batter without deflating it. One tool. Five jobs.

The Tapered Blade

The AWG Spurtle has a tapered, slightly curved blade, narrow enough to get into corners and jar edges, wide enough to flip a piece of fish without fumbling. The curve gives it the scooping action a flat blade lacks. This is the geometry that makes the spurtle different from everything else in your utensil holder.

Stirs Without Corners

A round spoon leaves unmixed batter in the corners of a bowl. A flat spatula leaves it on the sides of the pot. The spurtle’s tapered blade follows the curve of the pan and scrapes as it stirs. Nothing gets left behind.

Safe on All Surfaces

Solid wood won’t scratch non-stick, cast iron, carbon steel, or enamel. The spurtle’s curved blade is especially gentle because it contacts the pan surface smoothly rather than at a hard edge angle.
